Deaf and blind from nineteen months old, she learned language at a water pump at age seven — and never stopped. First deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts (Radcliffe, 1904), author of fourteen books including The Story of My Life, and a lecturer who toured the world for the American Foundation for the Blind, meeting every U.S. president from Cleveland to Kennedy. She campaigned for disability rights, women’s suffrage, and workers — insisting the barriers that mattered were the ones society built.

German composer who bridged the Classical and Romantic eras and expanded what music could express. He composed many of his greatest works — including the Ninth Symphony — while progressively losing his hearing, turning private catastrophe into art of overwhelming power.
