All four treat looking closely as a trained practice rather than a talent — Leonardo dissecting cadavers to draw a smile, Curie logging measurements ore sample by ore sample, Einstein running the same thought experiment for years, Franklin flying a kite to settle a hypothesis rather than argue it. None of them trusts a claim they have not tested themselves.

Usefulness need not be the first question

Each pursued work with no guaranteed audience or application in its own moment — Leonardo's flying machines, Curie's radioactivity before its danger or utility was understood, Einstein's relativity before Eddington's eclipse, Franklin's electrical experiments before the lightning rod had a market. The table agrees that the payoff of curiosity is often invisible until long after the labor.

The body and the biography absorb the cost

The real break is between Leonardo, whose notebooks answered to no one and often reached no conclusion, and Franklin, who treated an idea's value as unproven until it became a library, a hospital, or a nation's founding document. Curie and Einstein sit between them but lean toward Leonardo's patience with unglamorous or untested work — her ton-by-ton isolation of radium, his years of an unfinished unified theory — while still, unlike him, producing results the world eventually organized itself around. Franklin would likely press Leonardo on why so much brilliance went undelivered; Leonardo might answer that the delivering was never the point, and that Franklin's instinct to institutionalize everything risks mistaking usefulness for the whole of a discovery's worth. Neither is wrong: one measures a life by what outlived it in the world, the other by what it noticed while it was here.
