Virginia Woolf
1882–1941 · England
English novelist and essayist who remade the modern novel — Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, The Waves — by following consciousness itself, and whose essay A Room of One’s Own named the material conditions creative work actually requires: money, time, and a door that shuts. She co-founded the Hogarth Press and printed the century’s new voices on her own machine.
