His swan-necked flask experiments of the early 1860s dealt a final blow to the ancient idea of spontaneous generation, proving that life did not arise from nonliving matter but from other life, however small. From this came pasteurization, devised first to save French wine and later applied to milk, and from this too came his growing conviction, radical in its day, that microorganisms caused disease as well as decay.

That conviction reshaped medicine. Pasteur saved the French silk industry by identifying the microbial cause of a disease ravaging silkworms, then turned to human and animal illness directly, developing weakened, or 'attenuated,' vaccines — first for chicken cholera, then in a celebrated public trial at Pouilly-le-Fort in 1881 for anthrax, and finally, in 1885, for rabies, when he treated a boy bitten by a rabid dog and watched him survive. He founded the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1888 to carry the work forward, training a generation of microbiologists even as a series of strokes, beginning in 1868, left him partially paralyzed for the last decades of his life. Historians have also noted, from his private notebooks made public long after his death, that Pasteur was not above shading his public claims and skipping ethical steps we would now consider essential — a reminder that even science's great patient experimenter was also a man building a reputation.
