She was born Augusta Ada Byron in December 1815, the only legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron, and she never knew him as anything but an absence. Her parents separated within weeks of her birth, and Byron left England for good when she was a few months old, dying in Greece when she was eight. In 1842 she translated an Italian engineer's French-language paper on the Analytical Engine, and then, at Babbage's encouragement, added her own notes — which ran three times longer than the original article and went far beyond translation. Her Note G laid out, step by step, how the machine could compute a sequence of Bernoulli numbers, an algorithm now generally recognized as the first published computer program. More striking still, she grasped something Babbage himself hadn't fully articulated: that a machine acting on symbols, not just quantities, might one day compose music or manipulate language — a leap she called 'poetical science.' The notes drew little notice in her lifetime and were largely forgotten for a century, until Alan Turing cited her in 1950 and computer scientists rediscovered her work in earnest during the 1950s–80s, eventually naming a U.S. Department of Defense programming language, Ada, in her honor.

How their story ended

Lovelace died in November 1852 at age thirty-six — the same age her father had been at his death — after a long, painful illness now understood to have been uterine cancer, worsened by the era's practice of bloodletting as treatment. Her final months were marked by declining health, financial troubles from gambling debts she'd accumulated in a scheme with Babbage to bet on horse races using probability systems, and a late reconciliation with her mother. At her own request, she was buried beside the father she had never really known, at the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire.
