Before Freud, symptoms without physical cause were dismissed or punished. He sat patients on a couch and listened — to dreams, slips, jokes, resistances — and proposed the scandal that stuck: we are not transparent to ourselves, and the hidden part is running more than we admit.

What survives

Modern science has revised or rejected many specifics, and our Freud says so plainly. What survives is the practice: defense mechanisms have entered everyday language because we keep catching ourselves using them. The question he left is permanent — what is it you don't wish to know about yourself?
