In 1952, Hopper proposed that computers could translate human-readable language into machine code. 'Nobody believed that,' she recalled — computers did arithmetic, period. Her compiler, and the COBOL it led to, put programming within reach of the world.

Nanoseconds

Teaching admirals why satellite links lag, she handed out 11.8-inch wires — the distance light travels in a nanosecond. She kept a clock that ran counterclockwise, just to prove alternatives exist, and preached that it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
